Dear admission board - My name is Ruben Særkjær, and i am applying for the bachelor degree in Computer Graphic Arts. I am a 30 year old man, living in Viborg together with three other TAW students and my two cats.
When i was around five years old, my dad bought his first computer. For me this was an exciting new thing to have in our home, and i quickly learned how to turn it on and play games on it. Some years later, my dad bought some games called Dune II and Day of the Tentacle, today these two are still some of my favorites. I was intrigued by this new world, and wanted to know more about the creation of games.
Some years passed, and it wasn't until 2002, that i saw a guy, working in a program called 3d Studio Max. I acquired my own computer, and very soon after, i was using 3d Studio Max myself. Since then i have always had a dream about getting to work with 3d, especially in combination with games.
Later on, i had a setback. I was told by my doctor that i was colorblind, and my teacher said that i had to give up my dream about working with anything art related. I took her guidance, and ended up having some different jobs around the country; but my thoughts was still somewhat set on pursuing my dream.
A few years ago, i decided to move to Copenhagen, since a guy there offered me a three months internship, where he would teach me Cinema 4D. I figured that this was a great opportunity. After the internship, i moved to Viborg to attend The Drawing Academy to improve my, never before used, drawing abilities.
After TDA, i decided to get myself some education, and i applied for Visual HF at VGHF. I did not get accepted, but choose to continue with a regular HF, which i finished last summer with Arts as my main subject.,
Through these years, i have taught myself some different programs, most of them are related to 3d, but i have also worked a lot with photoshop. The programs are listed by rank of experience:
Zbrush +++
Photoshop +++
3D max ++
Sketchbook Pro ++
Cinema 4D +
Maya +
As you might notice in my portfolio, i am not in any way strong in 2d, and i still have tons to learn in 3d as well. But i will continue to practice, seek courses and tutorials to improve myself. I am also attending croquis every tuesday and thursday.
What i see myself working with, if i get this bachelor, is mostly as a 3d generalist with specialization in modelling and rigging.
Besides from my interest in 3d, i also have a passion for woodworking and to make funny costumes. Both with a wood lathe and as a carpenter. I have always liked to create with my hands, and i guess that is one of the reasons why most of my friends call me McGayver.
I wish i was able to include more in my portfolio, since i am well below the minimum in all categories, but time has been an issue this past year.
To fund my study, i will be able to pay it with SU and SU-loan.
Sincerely
Ruben Paw Nikolaj Særkjær
